We went for a wonderful hike through tea plantations a few weeks ago. It was just what we needed – fresh air, wonderful landscapes, and to be surrounded by nature again. Colombia has amazing landscapes – however, nature in my country tends to be perceived as a dangerous place where bullets of the different parties in conflict fly and hit their human targets, where crime hides, where anti-personnel mines explode and many bodies are buried in mass graves or not buried at all. 

It is a shame, and that’s why this photo of Sophia connecting with nature in Colombia is so special to me. Sophia will be part of a new generation of Colombians that will know a peaceful country. This generation will need to rebuild Colombia engaging forgotten regions that suffered decades of violence; it would be the generation that needs to leave behind hatred, without forgetting what happened in these five decades, to lay the foundation of a democracy that addresses and respects individual differences; a generation that needs to promote sustainable development in a dynamic, equitable and fair way in order to avoid creating again the conditions for violence; a generation that needs to offer opportunities for reconciliation to the ones that took up arms and caused terrible pain… This generation faces the challenge of building a Colombia at peace with itself but without forgetting that this needs to happen in one of the most mega diverse countries in the world.

It has been hot, very hot – and we have used all our creativity to get through this weather. Sophia specially enjoys her bath time at the balcony with fresh water. The setting would not be complete without the Iguanas observing carefully on the dark green mango tress in the background.

A new chef in the making - Sophia’s first try in the kitchen. The result? Glorious pancakes, we enjoyed one quite Sunday morning, with lots of coffee and a good chat. It’s becoming a tradition for Chin’s BDay.

52/52 - and 2015 in retrospect!

Sophia: A final portrait of all seven Gorricho cousins. It was just lovely to see you all together… plus you loved to play with all of them - teaching me the joy of family in this time of the year. 

Once again another year just flew by… and I completed 52 portraits! The satisfaction that comes with a completed project is just amazing. 

2015 without doubt was an intense year. The first six months, despite wanting to embrace change and our new life in Cali, I literally screamed out my frustration! Now my soul has calmed down and I have started to see the ‘caleño’chapter with new eyes. 

Huge life lessons arrived in 2015. Lessons about the importance of having family nearby, about the unique stardust friendship between grandparents and granddaughters, about old friends departing and new ones arriving, about excelling in working with an outstanding team, about finding balance in life and being happy… 

Most importantly, I saw my precious daughter bloomed and enjoyed every minute with her, witnessed how my brave husband found his way (once again) to shine in his job and follow his passions, and enjoy documenting so many little things that filled our lives with joy.

In 2016, I plan to continue with the 52 project but it will focus on our life and not only on Sophia. To have 2 years of her portraits is wonderful, but now that I have acquired the habit to post at least once a week, I want to expand it to document different moments of our family in Cali. 

A few hours away of the New Year I wholeheartedly want to wish you all a bright and fulfilling 2016, packed with love and the simple joy of being happy.

This is a very special portrait of Sophia on a “Colombian horse”, taken with an American 1930s standing camera in Popayan’s central square. Each and every representative of her Colombian grandparents’ generation had their photo taken on a horse just like that on any old town square anywhere in Colombia! Isn’t that right, Julia Ines….?
